Duchamp did many paintings throughout his career that coresponded to the forms of art he was studying at the time. Below we have chosen 6 paintings that show his sucession between forms as well as his shift from more conformed and oridinary art to the unique and contemporary art he is best known for.
For each painting we included the title, year it was completed, form of art it was inspired by, and a short description of what we found out about it. Even though Duchamp's works were based on certian forms, he added his own twist to each piece.

Landscape at Blainville (1902) Post Impressionism
One of Duchamp’s earliest works, this painting represents his family’s love of Claude Monet. He painted it when he was only 15. This is oil on canvas painting was his first oil one. Since this was one of the earlier works of Duchamp, you don’t really see any of his contemporary work shown quite yet.

Portrait of Dr. R. Dumouchel (1910) Dada and Surrealism
This doctor was part of the radiology field when he posed for this painting. This is why his hand has a glow; to represent how he works with X-rays. The glow also represents how he also has “healing powers”. Dr. R. Dumouchel was a childhood friend of Duchamp’s

Chess Players (1911) Dada and Surrealism
This painting was influenced by the Parisian avant-garde. Chess was a big part of Duchamp’s life; he made it on to a French team in the 1920s and continued to play for the rest of his life. The arms in this painting symbolize the interactions between the players in a chess match. The shapes all sort of come together to create the figures shown and make a flow through the painting.

Young Girl and Man in Spring (1911) Fauvism
This work was the first of Duchamp’s to break away from any influences of other painters. It was also his first work that steered away from his experiments with Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cézannism. Finally, it started his theme of Large Glass that we see expressed throughout much of his later work.

Nude Decending a Staircase No. 2 (1913) Cubist and Futurist
Duchamp used different colors to portray the different parts of the figure. The body of this figure is made up abstract shapes that have been put together in a way to suggest rhythm and show the movement of the figure going in on itself.

Nine Malic Moulds (1915) Abstract and Dada
This painting was said to change painting history. Instead of using a canvas, Duchamp decided it would be interesting to use a glass plane to create this painting. The theme confronted the idea of how a man meets a woman and that their relationship is defined by the man as the “firm base on solid land” and the women as the “transparent cage floating above”. This basically is saying that men provide the foundation of the relationship and the women add on to it and make it unique to those people.
