SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC EVENTS IN THE 1900-1920

There were many events that changed life in the 1900s and some of these events might have infuenced and/or inspired Marcel Duchamp and his artworks. Below are some of the bigger and influential events that occured during this time period.

Political Events in the 1900s through 1920s

Roosevelt is famous for his "Square Deal" plan that supported the progressives idea of wanting choices and not wanting to be at the whim of one company. The plan helped to break big businesses and monopolies and earned him the name "trustbuster". Roosevelt was also an avid outdoorsman and stared many nature conservation projects around the county.Roosevelt believed that the preident and the federal government had a bigger job that included protecting consumers interests and regulate corporations.

Taft liked the idea of modernizing and having a more peaceful way of doing things. Taft was also in favor of supporting the progressives in their business ideas and continued to break up monopolies in his office. Taft also wanted to limit taxes to increase trade and importation. During Tafts presidency two new states, Arizona and New Mexico joined the USA.

Wilson considered himself as the man to look after the american people and again adopted a [[#|progressive]] viewpoint on many topics. Wilson, like Roosevelt and Taft, broke up monopolies, created the Federal Reserve System, and enacted many laws about working standards such as the child labor laws. Wilson also was involed very much internationally and helped form the League of Nations. In 1914 World War I started and Wilson tried for as long as possible to keep America neutral in the war until 1916 when the USA declared war on Germany.

Economic Events in the 1900s through the 1920s
The 20th century saw great economic changes in the 1900s through 1920. In 1900 America's population was more than seventy-six million. By the end of the decade, the population had risen to ninety-one million, and agriculture was slowly being replaced with [[#|industrial jobs]]. The United States soon became known as a major industrial nation. During the 20th century, raw materials became cheaper, making consumption increase and prices decrease.

During the Progressive Era, Americans saw reforms that changed its economic, social and political ways. Economic reformers persued to regulate trusts and big businesses.
With the help of global expansion and increased [[#|markets]], big business grew, creating a new management that became more recognized later in the next decade. During the 20th century, businesses expanded and merged with similar companies. Because of this there was an elimination of competition. But the people were worried that the rise of big businesses would destroy America's image as land of opportunity where success as a self made business owner was possible.

The 1900-1920s is called The Progressive Era. The progressive era was an era of reform. Industries and corporations were booming. Labor unions continued to grow as child labor and unsafe working conditions did to.Due to families needing children to work, most kids didn't go to school. Only 1/3 of kids went to elementary school and only 10% of that graduated from high school. Women were entering the labor force. The growth of big business opened up new opportunities for women such as saleswomen, clerks, and factory workers.

The progressive era was a period of social activism. Womens rights groups and movements started. Like, NAWSA and the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Labor laws and unions were coming into effect. Child labor restrictions, and laws against unsafe working conditions were created. The NAACP was form which is National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
